Albert Richard Smith surgeon, author and showman was very popular in Victorian London. In his packed lecture-shows he went through his ascent to Mont Blanc (1851), offering the opportunity to live the exotic dream of the Alpine heights and to buy his gadgets, anticipating the current merchandising.
After him many others adventures were on sale: Mount Everest, the Arctic and the Antarctic, the Klondike gold rush.
To reach impervious peaks without moving from home, was now satisfied by board games, photographs and later films.
The iAlp project enhances and promotes Alpine cultural heritage. Its name, Interactive Alpine museums, stands to indicate the innovation that the Museo Nazionale della Montagna of Turin and the Musée Alpin of Chamonix intend to bring to the conservation and valorisation of their collections, in view of their efficient use for cultural activities and tourism.
